Seed library in Waldenbuch: This is how diversity blooms in the garden!

In Waldenbuch it's not just in the gardens, but also in the city library. This launched the city's first seed library, which enables hobby gardeners to borrow seeds, plant them, harvest them and then bring them back. A whole new chapter in the connection between literature and botany! As the Stuttgarter Nachrichten reports, the loan periods for seeds are even longer than those for books. The goal of this initiative? To promote species diversity and biodiversity through the planting and recovery of seeds.

The city library has already put together an impressive range, including heirloom tomato varieties such as “Ernteglück”, “Bonner Beste” and “Veni Vidi Vici”. Vegetables such as peas, lettuce and beans are also part of the offer. A total of eleven old varieties are available, which are currently being enthusiastically accepted by gardening enthusiasts. According to the library manager, Susanne Dosch, the seedlings are thriving and are very popular.

The range in detail

A look at the tomato varieties on offer shows how diverse this range is. Heirloom tomato varieties like thisCherry tomato idyll- a GDR breed - impresses with its aromatic and sweet taste. • Stabtomate Tamina: Robust und widerstandsfähig, süß-säuerlich im Geschmack.

A step towards ecological responsibility

The many advantages of growing old varieties are obvious. In addition to preserving biodiversity, these plants help improve the taste of the dishes prepared from the fresh ingredients. This not only supports the palate, but also promotes the connection to local plants that are of great importance to nature. Unfortunately, sourcing such varieties can be a challenge for many home gardeners, but seed libraries offer a welcome solution, as well FR.de notes.

At a time when invasive species and non-native plants are displacing some of the old varieties, it is important that such initiatives are put in place. The seed library is a creative step to not only provide gardeners with access to valuable knowledge and seeds, but also to raise awareness of environmentally friendly farming methods.

With the new concept of the Waldenbuch public library, we can be excited to see how the region's gardens develop when culture and nature work hand in hand. A truly thriving project!
