Tourism in Baden-Württemberg: Record numbers and new grand hotels!

Tourism in Baden-Württemberg is buoyant in the first half of 2025, despite a notable decline in overnight stays. According to that Baden-Württemberg State Statistical Office The number of guests rose to a total of 10.9 million, which corresponds to an increase of 1.5% compared to the previous year. While domestic arrivals were pleasing with an increase of 2.2%, there was a decline of 1.0% in foreign guests.

An interesting development can also be seen in overnight stays, which were reduced by a total of 0.3% and now stand at 26.7 million. The differentiation between domestic and foreign guests is particularly striking: While domestic guests have a stable overnight stay situation with an increase of 0.7%, the number of overnight stays among foreign visitors fell by 4.3%.

Regional differences in tourism

A closer look at the different regions of the country reveals exciting trends. In Hegau, for example, the highest increase in overnight stays was recorded at 7.3%, followed by the Central Black Forest and Lake Constance, which each increased by 1.1%. In contrast, the Württemberg Allgäu-Upper Swabia regions showed a decline of 1.2% and Stuttgart even had to accept a decline of 4.0%. These regional differences could raise some interesting questions and provide insight into regional travel patterns.

A highlight of the year is the opening of the European Court in Baden-Baden, the first of three planned grand hotels. With 126 rooms and seven long-stay apartments, it will certainly bring new impetus to tourism there and could possibly help to stabilize or even increase the number of overnight stays.

Look at the forecasts and trends

The current situation in tourism shows that the demand for travel is both increasing and decreasing. The trend towards longer trips and increased demand for main holiday trips are particularly noteworthy. This could indicate that people are placing more value on relaxing vacation times and are currently taking fewer short trips.

Looking into the future, two thirds of Germans plan to take at least one vacation trip in 2025. This positive sentiment could help to further increase the number of overnight stays and the international appeal of this region. The tourism strategists in Baden-Württemberg still have a lot to do to provide the right impulses so that the state remains highly popular.
