BAYER GIANTS celebrate their first success of the season: 80:68 victory over Tübingen!

The BAYER GIANTS Leverkusen celebrated their first win of the season on October 13, 2025. The team around captain Dennis Heinzmann could finally celebrate with a convincing 80:68 win against the Tigers Tübingen. The man of the game was fully deserved by Heinzmann himself, who achieved an impressive efficiency rating of 35 with 21 points, 15 rebounds and 6 blocks. Together with John Williams Jr., who also scored 21 points, and Sebastian Brach, who consolidated his spots with 14 points, the team made the fans cheer and the Tigers look old on the field.

However, the start to the game was anything but ideal. The Tigers immediately went on a 13-2 run, but couldn't take the GIANTS' courage away. In the first quarter, Leverkusen slowly found their way into the game and ended it with a deficit of 25:17. In the second quarter, the GIANTS accelerated, caught up with free throws and went into halftime with a narrow deficit of 36:40. After the break it was a 7-0 run that turned things around and put the GIANTS in the lead, which laid the foundation for the eventual victory.

A strong team and looking forward

Head coach Michael Koch praised the second half as the best of the season. The team has found itself and shown that it is capable of greater things. The next opponent, the Eisbären Bremerhaven, is already waiting for the GIANTS on October 18th at 6 p.m. The current squad is promising and the BAYER GIANTS Leverkusen already have clear plans for the 2024/25 season. The contract extension of Calin Nita, the talented 19-year-old Romanian youth international, also brings a bit of fresh air. Nita has fought for a place in the ProB and would like to take on even more responsibility in the future.

Nita, who played an average playing time of 9:26 minutes in 22 games, recently presented himself as a top performer in the 1st Regionalliga West, where he scored 10.6 points per game. In particular, his decisive three-pointer against SG Bergische Löwen will be remembered. Equipped with a German passport, Nita plans to prove herself with both the professionals and the U22.

Promoting young talent in basketball

Speaking of young talent, basketball in Germany is increasingly investing in the future. The Institute for Applied Training Science in Leipzig has published new infographics on promoting young competitive sports. The aim is to present the complex funding structures simply and visually. The current infographic shows important bases for promoting young talent, the successes of athletes and the paths that lead them into the system. Adam Ligocki, the sporting director of the German Basketball Federation, emphasizes the benefit of this information for everyone involved - from athletes to coaches to clubs and associations.

The BAYER GIANTS seem to be following a clear course not only on the field, but also in their youth work. With a solid team and a well-thought-out strategy, the coming seasons could be very exciting. We are excited to see how the team will perform in the next games.

The start of the new season has been made. Let’s stay tuned and support our GIANTS on their successful path!
