Revitalization of the Iller: 1.3 km of new natural space for Altenstadt!

The Iller, an idyllic river in the Lower Iller Valley, is about to undergo extensive revitalization. As part of the “AGILE ILLER” project, the riverbed and the bank landscape near Altenstadt will be extensively redesigned over a stretch of around 1.3 kilometers. This improvement is not only a benefit for nature, but also for residents and the entire region.

With total funding of 6.28 million euros, 80 percent of which comes from funding from the ANK program from the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), the project officially begins on February 1, 2025 and will run until December 31, 2028. The federal government and the states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg are providing the funds for this. The construction measures focus on improving water and bank structures in order to restore the variety of habitats and strengthen flood protection, which the BfN addresses in its project profile.

Public participation and information events

At the beginning of the project, a tour took place on October 16th specifically for authorities, mayors and those involved in the project. The following day, a public information event was held, which was met with great interest and attracted 108 visitors. Many engaging discussions and questions made it clear that the population is showing great interest in the future shape of the Iller, as Baden-Württemberg reports.

In addition, concrete measures are being implemented as part of the renaturation to ensure natural water development. These measures are aimed at creating floodplains, increasing the structural diversity of water bodies and revitalizing the habitats of the floodplains and banks.

A contribution to biodiversity

The project contributes to a variety of environmental goals. It supports the “Blue Ribbon Germany” initiative, which advocates the renaturation of rivers and increases the quality of life in cities and rural areas. According to a study by the Federal Environment Agency, natural banks not only help biodiversity, but also reduce the risk of flooding and improve the ecological status of water bodies.

The planned redesign, which includes various design elements such as groynes and dead wood inserts, is intended to promote reconnection of the living spaces. This not only brings benefits for nature, but also for the population, who will benefit from the revitalization through experience points with access to the Iller.

Overall, the AGILE ILLER project is a step in the right direction to revitalize the Iller and its surroundings in a natural way. Experts and residents can look forward to a future in which the river once again assumes a central place in the region's ecological and social fabric.
