Triathlon in Tübingen: Major road closures on the weekend!
An exciting weekend is coming up in Tübingen, as the Mey Generalbau Triathlon will take place in the city on Sunday, July 20, 2025. Preparations are in full swing and associated traffic closures are unavoidable. At the weekend, specifically on July 19th and 20th, numerous streets and squares will be closed to car traffic in order to offer participants a safe environment. Cyclists must push their bikes during this period, while pedestrians are still allowed to pass through the closed areas. No parking is to be expected on the day of the event between 6:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. along the running and cycling routes, as gea.de reported.
There will be significant restrictions, particularly in the southern city center, from Saturday 4 p.m. to Sunday 10 p.m. Uhlandstrasse will be completely closed between Karlstrasse and Uhland Monument. Friedrichstrasse from Poststrasse, Karlstrasse, Europastrasse (from building no. 3 to Trautwein-Eck), as well as the Eberhardsbrücke are also affected from Saturday, 5 p.m. to Sunday, 10 p.m. In the areas of Mühlstrasse and Lustnauer Tor you should also be prepared for full closures on Sundays from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Access to and departure from Österberg will only be possible via the “Untere Halden” path.
Special timetables and diversions
The impact on local public transport should not be underestimated. TüBus has set up extensive diversions and a special timetable. These diversions are divided into three phases, starting with the closure of the Neckar Bridge on Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until the end of operations and on Sunday from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The Neckarbrücke stop will not be served during this time, while the Stadtgraben stop will also be served, as TüBus explains in its traffic reports (tuebus.de).
In the second phase, which applies on Sunday between the start of operations and 7:30 a.m. and from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., the diversion remains in place. From 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., even more extensive diversions will come into force in the third phase, as Mühlstrasse and Wilhelmstrasse are also affected.
Parking options and directions to the event
There are various ways for spectators and participants to reach the city center. The Kaufland parking garage at Reutlinger Straße 44 and the parking lot at the Edeka Center at Eugenstraße 74 are available. Coaches can also use the festival area as an alternative parking space. The footpaths into the old town are signposted accordingly and offer a clear route to the event highlights.
Anyone who thinks that the sporting activities in Tübingen are unique may not have considered the closures and events in other cities. For example, Berlin also has various closures for triathlons and street festivals in store for the same weekend (berliner-zeitung.de).
Overall, the Mey Generalbau Triathlon not only brings with it sporting highlights, but also a wealth of challenges for residents, visitors and traffic. There is great anticipation for the event and the city of Tübingen will once again prove that it is a great place for sporting events. We keep our fingers crossed for all participants for a successful triathlon!
