Cinema joys in Tuttlingen: The Canoe of Manitu” trumps the box office!
In the cinema summer time you can feel a real sigh of relief in Tuttlingen. Despite the traditionally lower-grossing season, cinema operators are pleased with increasing viewer numbers. Wolfgang Traber, operator of the Scala cinema, has every reason to be happy: his audience is enthusiastic about the new film “The Canoe of Manitu”, which, according to him, is a real audience favorite. The film industry didn't just have to rely on the best weather this summer; Even rainy days didn't spoil the mood of the spectators. Heiko Kimmich, theater director of the CineStar in Villingen-Schwenningen, also reports positive visitor numbers. “Lilo & Stitch” and “Grand Prix of Europe” attracted audiences to the cinemas even in bright sunshine.
Particularly noteworthy is the film “Grand Prix of Europe”, which is considered a surprise success. Its proximity to the famous Europa-Park probably contributed to its high popularity. The audience numbers are great and at the same level as last year, which makes Kimmich very satisfied. This summer, however, there is a highlight of a special quality: on September 13th and 14th there will be a Germany-wide cinema festival, where film tickets can be purchased for just five euros.
Success in German cinemas
This year, special attention is being paid to Michael “Bully” Herbig’s new film “The Canoe of Manitu”. After just two weeks, the film already reached two million viewers and has now sold a total of 2.7 million cinema tickets, making it the third most successful German film of 2025. What's surprising is that it even sold more tickets than "Jurassic World 4: Rebirth" with 2.3 million tickets sold. However, the most successful films of 2025 are “Lilo & Stitch” with 3.2 million tickets and “A Minecraft Film” with 3.5 million tickets, which indicates an increasing popularity of family films.
The great demand is also reflected in the Film Funding Agency (FFA), which continuously provides current market data on the German film and cinema industry. This includes visits, sales, admission prices and much other relevant information that strengthens the grip of cinema operators. The FFA has set itself the task of researching and promoting the structures of the film business in Germany. There are film hit lists every month that provide a strong representation of viewer interests. Current data is available on their website, providing a deep insight into the industry.
A look into the future
Fans can look forward to upcoming highlights. Among the new films expected in the near future are the conclusion of “Downton Abbey”, the sequel to “Zoomania” and the second part of “Wicked”. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” in particular promises to be another hit, according to studio operators’ expectations. So it remains exciting to see which films will hit the screens in the rest of the year.
Overall, it shows that despite the rather difficult tradition in summer, the cinema jumping gates are full of life and the fun of the cinema remains unbroken. The audience knows where good business is done, and the cinemas in Tuttlingen and Villingen-Schwenningen not only benefit from good weather, but also from a remarkable variety of films.
