Dementia Week 2025: Tips for dealing sensitively with those affected!
Something is happening in the region! The 6th Bavarian Dementia Week will take place from September 19th to 28th, 2025, and it has a lot to offer. The Bavarian State Ministry for Health, Care and Prevention, together with various local actors, has launched a program that aims to increase knowledge about dementia among the population and improve the quality of life of those affected and their relatives. The main aim is to promote acceptance of dementia in society and to raise awareness of how we can all contribute to a better understanding of this condition.
A very special highlight of Dementia Week is a lecture on the topic “Understanding dementia and how to deal with it”. The information event is organized by the specialist office for caring relatives of the Aichach-Friedberg district office and the senior representative Ms. Maier. Ms. Lörch-Merkle from the Swabian Department of Dementia and Care was able to be won as a speaker. The lecture will take place on Wednesday, September 24th, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the vocational school for nursing in Mering. And best of all: participation is free! However, places are limited, which is why registration is required by September 22, 2025 at the latest. Those interested can contact by email angehoigenfachstelle@lra-aic-fdb.de or register by phone at 08251/92-1238. For further information about Dementia Week it is also worth taking a look at the website www.demenzwoche.bayern.de.
Workshop on communication with people affected by dementia
Another exciting program item comes in the form of a workshop entitled “Communication with people with dementia: words, gestures and looks that touch”. The focus here is on improving communication with relatives affected by dementia. Participants have the opportunity to learn important aspects such as empathy and patience, which are crucial for a foundation of trust. Non-verbal means of communication, such as gestures and looks, are also covered. Practical tips and techniques from everyday life help you to cope better with challenging situations. The workshop also offers space to exchange experiences with other caring relatives - a valuable opportunity to learn from each other.
Understanding of challenging behavior
It's no secret that the behavior of people with dementia can be challenging for many caregivers. Helplessness and disorientation can lead to anxiety, while aggressiveness often arises from frustration. Understanding such behaviors is crucial: it is important to create quiet and relaxed times to avoid stress and too much excitement. Some people may be trying to stop aggressive behavior, but it may be more helpful to explore the reasons for these expressions. Talking about the sick person's thoughts and feelings can often work wonders.
Quiet environments, gentle words and physical contact are also important elements that can be used as calming measures. Creating a relaxed atmosphere is essential for dealing with dementia. These aspects are also part of the recommendations on the website German Alzheimer Society and that are relevant to everyone living or dealing with dementia.
The upcoming events and workshops during Dementia Week not only provide valuable information, but also the opportunity to exchange ideas with others and find support. Be there and expand your knowledge so that we can do more together for those affected and their families!
