The Aichach-Friedberg district is preparing for widespread blackouts

An important initiative to prepare for possible nationwide power outages in Germany is ending soon. The Aichach-Friedberg district will complete the project group “Implementation of the special operations plan for a nationwide power outage” on December 31, 2025. This group was launched in September 2022 under the leadership of Boris Peter to best prepare the district for future power outages. The basis for these efforts was the “Special Operations Plan for Area-wide Power Outage” drawn up by district fire inspector Klaus Hartwig in 2021.

In addition to the district office, the participants in the project group also included cities and municipalities, the district fire inspection, the police, the Bundeswehr as well as aid organizations and other specialist departments. In a total of 18 meetings, numerous concepts were developed in order to remain able to act even in crisis situations.

Targeted concepts for critical infrastructures

Not only is the technical preparation crucial, but also the personal precautions of citizens. Stocking up on food, water and other important goods is recommended. A concept for psychosocial emergency care is also being developed to provide citizens with the best possible support.

The threats of cyber attacks

Cyber attacks on critical infrastructure are also a big issue these days. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) warned of a growing threat, particularly in connection with energy supplies. State-controlled actors from countries such as Russia, China and Iran are making the stability of the electricity grids more difficult. Indeed, recent incidents show that power grids are vulnerable - such as the failure of the KA-SAT satellite network on February 24, 2022, which affected 5,800 wind farms in Germany. The example of the flood disaster in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate in 2021 is also an impressive example of the vulnerability of the electricity supply.

Alternatives for emergency power supply

In view of such challenges, it is important that private individuals also take measures to provide emergency power. The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief recommends using diesel generators or alternative power sources. Small solar panels and mobile power stations offer an attractive solution here. They are compact, emission-free and can usually be used in rental apartments. These devices can not only help reduce energy costs, but also provide power for important devices in the event of a crisis. A power station can be used to charge cell phones, operate light sources and supply medical devices.

Although the possibility of a blackout in Germany is considered unlikely, the preparations of the project groups mentioned and recommendations from the specialist authorities can help strengthen the resilience of the population. From 2026, a new “Civil Defense” project group will further develop the work in the area of civil protection and thus also support citizens in the future.

With these strategies and precautionary measures, citizens and infrastructure remain well prepared even in the event of a crisis. As is often the case – being better prepared for everything is a good thing!
