Bishop Oster inspires at the thanksgiving service in Altötting!
An eventful time for the parishes of Altötting, Altötting-Süd and Unterzholzhausen: From January 16th to 18th, 2026, Bishop Stefan Oster SDB was traveling in the region and met with full-time and volunteer staff from the three parishes. His visit was a special event marked by intensive discussions and a festive conclusion.
One of the highlights was the thanksgiving service in the St. Josef Church in Altötting-Süd. There, Bishop Oster expressed his gratitude for the encounters with the local people. He connected “the many pilgrims and visitors” with the challenge of making everyday parish life harmonious. In his sermon, he spoke about the privilege of living at the place of pilgrimage and urged the congregation to always keep the joy of God's presence in their hearts and to cultivate relationships with God and their fellow human beings. The encouragement was also followed by a heartfelt thank you to the dedicated helpers who contributed to carrying out the visitation. The service was musically accompanied by the St. Josef singing ensemble, which performed Joseph Rheinberger's “Missa in G,” which further enriched the celebration.
A look into the future
But the parishes are already turning their attention to future events. Preparations for the youth foot pilgrimage are in full swing and everyone involved is looking forward to this spiritual tradition of the pilgrimage site Altötting. Here the diocese of Passau impressively shows how faith, community and support can go hand in hand. The event aims not only to uphold spiritual values but also to strengthen the sense of togetherness among participants.
Significant dates have also been set for the future, such as the Feast of Mary on August 15, 2025, which will be celebrated with a solemn program in the Basilica of St. Anna. Processions and the pontifical mass with Bishop Oster are planned, which once again underlines the importance of the place of pilgrimage. These events offer space for communal experiences and deep spiritual experiences.
The coming weeks and months promise an exciting time for the region. The committed volunteers and full-time staff of the parishes are well on their way to mastering the challenges and keeping the traditions alive. The multi-layered encounters during the visit will have an impact for a long time and show how valuable cohesion in the community is.
