The selection process and the competition
As the process progressed, personal interviews and feedback in June 2025 reduced the selection to four applicants. Stefan Ott was ultimately able to assert himself against Martin Schafbauer and Helmut Weigl, who were also considered for candidacy. On July 7, 2025, Matthias Schöberl surprisingly withdrew from the race, meaning the remaining candidates had to face their competitors again. CSU district chairwoman Susanne Herding acknowledged the diversity of the candidates and reiterated the trust in their abilities.
In a national context, the CSU is also showing in other regions that it is preparing for the coming elections. The list of candidates for the local elections was presented in Nuremberg on May 17, 2025, where, among others, the incumbent mayor Marcus König received great support from the party.
