New bus line 460 E: connection between Neumarkt and Amberg begins!

On January 1, 2026, the new nationally important bus route 460 E celebrates its official launch and connects Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz with Amberg via the stations Pilsach, Lauterhofen, Kastl and Ursensollen. This important step to improve local public transport in the region is the result of a collaboration between the Amberg-Sulzbach Local Transport Association (ZNAS) and the Neumarkt district, supported by the Greater Nuremberg Transport Association (VGN). The timetable provides for a regular hourly service from Monday to Saturday, while on Sundays and public holidays there is a two-hour service. Neumarkt Aktuell reports that citizens will also have the opportunity to use on-demand buses or shared taxis during off-peak hours.

The aim of this new connection is clear: to strengthen local public transport and promote sustainable mobility in the region. Merz Reisen will operate the bus line and, with barrier-free vehicles in a uniform VGN design, will ensure that registering for the new line remains easy for all citizens. This measure is particularly aimed at improving work, school and leisure transport, which is of great benefit to many families and commuters.

Promotion and support

Another plus point in this project is the financial support from the Free State of Bavaria. In the first year of operation, 65% of the operating costs can be covered, and in particularly eligible regions such as Amberg-Sulzbach even 70%. Such initiatives are particularly important to further strengthen local public transport. [NAG Bayern].

Another aspect that should not be neglected is the great potential for public transport expansion in Bavaria. A current study by the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) shows that massive investments are necessary to increase passenger numbers from the current 12 billion to up to 21 billion annually over the next 15 years. Zeit describes that significant funds are needed to achieve this goal, which also includes the further development of lines such as the 460 E.

Overall, the new bus line 460 E offers an excellent opportunity to better connect the periphery and make local transport a reliable mobility partner for all citizens. With the right support and planning, these advances are an example of how local public transport in Bavaria can be successfully strengthened.
