Environmental awards for Amberg: Innovative ideas are honored!

Amberg recently recognized the achievements of several notable initiatives that are committed to a better environment. At a celebratory city council meeting in the historic town hall, Mayor Michael Cerny (CSU) presented the awards and checks worth a total of 1,500 euros to the winners. This honor takes place every two years, and this year the awards were distributed among multiple recipients.

The first prize winners are the Haberberger and Trummer families, who take care of the so-called gift cabinets. This idea came about during the lockdown and the first gift cabinet, known as “Frieda”, was set up on Bergsteig in January 2021. For their exemplary commitment, the two families each received a check for 500 euros Mittelbayerische.de reported.

Pioneer in environmental protection

Another award winner worth mentioning is the Amberger Tafel in collaboration with the Malteser Relief Service. These organizations have jointly installed a photovoltaic system on the new building on Sulzbacher Straße, which is used to supply the cooling devices with electricity. Jürgen Stauber, the second chairman of the board, did not miss the opportunity to thank the project's supporters, which shows the community's high appreciation for such environmentally friendly projects. Further information can be found at Wifam.de.

The Federal Nature Conservation Association (BN) and the State Association for Bird Protection (LBV) were also honored for their tireless work to protect frogs, toads and newts. Every year they build protective fences to make the animals' migration to their spawning grounds safer. In this way, they make a decisive contribution to promoting and preserving local biodiversity.

The German Environmental Prize

These awards are related to other important environmental awards presented in Germany. Every October, the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) awards the German Environmental Prize, which comes with a whopping 500,000 euros and is one of the most highly endowed environmental awards in Europe. At this year's ceremony in Chemnitz, the prize will be awarded by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. This year's winners include the climate researcher Prof. Sonia Seneviratne and the management duo of the steel galvanizing company ZINQ, Lars Baumgurtel and Dr. Birgitt Bendiek, how DBU.de reported.

Initiatives that are characterized by environmental relief, innovation, model character and unique selling point receive full points and go through a strict selection process. It is gratifying to see how local projects in Amberg can contribute to the major environmental policy goals at the federal level.
