Discover Schillingsfürst: The Baroque Pearl of Franconia in detail!

Next Wednesday, July 9, 2025, BR Heimat will present an exciting radio program from 6:05 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. that will take listeners to Schillingsfürst. The moderator Tom Viewegh will introduce the “Baroque pearl on the Frankenhöhe”, which scores not only with its idyllic location in the Frankenhöhe Nature Park, but also with its rich cultural diversity. Schillingsfürst, whose approximately 2,700 residents have been repeatedly threatened with destruction in the past, today offers a wonderful mix of history and culture. Enjoy folk music and learn more about the region's traditions, presented by music compiler Maria Bauer.

As can be read in br.de, the program will also shed light on the numerous museums in Schillingsfürst. Among other things, there is the Ludwig Dörfler Franconian Painter Museum, the Brunnenhaus Museum with a historic ox treading facility and a museum for the French Foreign Legion. This diversity reflects the cultural depth of the region.

A gem of baroque architecture

The impressive baroque castle of the Princes of Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, which rises picturesquely on a mountain spur, is a landmark of the city. Since it was first mentioned in documents in the year 1000, the history of the castle has been characterized by reconstruction and destruction. While it was burned down in 1316 under Louis the Bavarian, it underwent a significant expansion under Prince Karl Albrecht between 1753 and 1793. Today the castle stands as a “particularly landscape-defining monument” in Bavaria, which underlines its importance, as reported on schloss-schillingsfuerst.de.

In the castle museum, visitors can admire exhibits from the 18th and 19th centuries, which provide exciting insights into the history of European ruling families. Prince Constantin zu Hohenlohe even founded a Liszt Museum, which is closely linked to concerts at the “Franz Liszt” Weimar University of Music. There are also daily falconry demonstrations in the castle park, which delights both locals and tourists.

A place full of tradition and customs

The broadcast on BR Heimat will also shed light on techniques and traditions that are typical of the region. Insights into regional crafts and customs promise to bring the listeners closer to the cultural treasures of Franconia. The village community is closely connected and maintains its customs, which is reflected in the numerous festivals and events.

Some museums, like the Romantisches Franconia describes, also introduce the history of falconry. This ancient tradition fascinates both young and old and brings history to life. If you want to experience authentic Franconia, you cannot avoid a visit to Schillingsfürst.
