Bavaria's bathing lakes: Best water quality almost everywhere - just a problem child!

Summertime is just around the corner and Bavarians are looking forward to relaxing days at the lakes. According to reports, the European Environment Agency (EEA) has examined the water quality of Bavaria's swimming lakes and discovered some good news. Most of the waters in the Free State are of excellent quality, which makes the bathing season extremely promising. Loud Mercury Only one lake in Bavaria passed the negative test: the Grüntensee near Wertach, which is known as an artificially created reservoir, received an inadequate rating at one measuring point.

In total, the EEA examined 2,300 bathing waters nationwide, with only nine of them being classified as inadequate. This represents considerable value, as 90.5 percent of the waters are of excellent quality, which promises carefree pleasure for bathers. The bodies of water that tested positive include Lake Starnberg, Lake Ammer, Lake Chiemsee and Lake Walchen, which are very popular in the Munich area.

EU and water quality: A look at the overall ranking

The EEA has also carried out a comprehensive survey of water quality across Europe as part of its annual swimming season reporting. She was shocked to see that only 85 percent of the bathing waters were rated as “excellent” at most. In Germany, however, this value is above average - 90.5 percent of the required standards are achieved here. Another exciting point: Germany is one of the countries with the best water quality values in the entire EU and ranks eighth best among 29 member states evaluated.

A look at the neighbors reveals that Austria ranks third with 95.8 percent of bathing areas with excellent water quality, while Switzerland lands in the middle with 83.1 percent. At a time when summer becomes the perfect opportunity for many to cool off in the water, the numbers clearly show that efforts to ensure good water quality pay off.

Water samples and health safety

The EEA report, which is produced during the swimming season, also examines the waters for fecal bacteria that can potentially cause health problems. The organisms tested include intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli, which are considered indicators of contaminants originating from wastewater and agriculture. The risk of contamination can increase, especially after heavy rainfall, prompting monitoring authorities to adopt appropriate measures such as bathing bans or warning notices, as the EEA explains in its report.

In summary, it can be said that the chances for a carefree day at the beach in the Free State of Bavaria are excellent this season. Despite the poor rating of Grüntensee, the overwhelming majority of Bavarian lakes remain in top condition and promise summer refreshment without any worries. Anyone planning a trip to one of the many beautiful swimming lakes can rest assured - summer can come!
