Revolt in Aschaffenburg: early ICE is canceled – commuters are outraged!
The announcement by Deutsche Bahn is causing a stir: from mid-December 2023, the ICE 1022 will no longer stop in Aschaffenburg at 7:05 a.m. as usual. Instead, the train moves this stop to Hanau. The reason given for the deletion is stable driving operations. But the reactions to this are clear: commuters and local politicians are outraged.
Mayor Jürgen Herzing (SPD) describes the decision as “fatal”. He emphasizes that the 7:05 a.m. stop is essential for many commuters in order to arrive in Frankfurt on time. The ICE takes around 30 minutes for the route, so arrival before 8 a.m. is generally possible. The alternative stop at 7.33 a.m. remains in place, but this could become problematic due to the expected overload. “There’s something there,” says Herzing, hoping for a period of reconsideration on the part of the railway. District Administrator Alexander Legler (CSU) also calls for a review and expresses concern about the economic consequences of the decision.
According to the available static data, around 3,800 people commute from the Bavarian Lower Main to Frankfurt every day, including 608 commuters on long-distance connections between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The Aschaffenburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry criticizes the loss of the stop as being detrimental to the location conditions in the region. Bundestag member Andrea Lindholz (CSU) has already contacted Deutsche Bahn and the Federal Ministry of Transport to arrange for the stop to be returned to the summer timetable.
Deutsche Bahn also announces a standardization of ICE lines from the 2026 timetable to ensure more stable rail operations. However, this measure does not seem to be understandable for all commuters and leaves many with questions. Will the immense protest from Aschaffenburg actually be heard?
The situation surrounding train traffic is not the only challenge facing the Aschaffenburg region. A new initiative, the Learn to Skate Academy, recently opened its doors and offers monthly classes for skaters of all ages. Whether you're a beginner or aspiring to compete, the academy is dedicated to promoting a love of ice skating.
In an interesting counterpoint to the problems facing transportation, the academy offers a variety of programs tailored to all skill levels and ages. Anyone who is enthusiastic about figure skating has the opportunity to develop their skills in a professional environment - whether in Basic 1, Adult 1-6 or the Snowplow Sam Series.
Finally, it is to be hoped that both the concerns of commuters and the opportunities for young talent in ice sports will be heard. In times of change in mobility, there must also be solutions that take all sides into account. The discussion remains exciting and will certainly make many headlines.
