Schweinfurt fails dramatically: penalty shootout costs the quarter-finals!
An exciting evening in the Bavarian Toto Cup ended last Tuesday for 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 with a dose of drama. In the round of 16, the Schweinfurters met the regional league team SV Viktoria Aschaffenburg and had to admit defeat 8:9 on penalties after the score had been 2:2 in regular time. The game offered action-packed and exciting moments that kept the 1,092 spectators in the stadium in suspense.
Already in the 11th minute, Aschaffenburg took the lead through Benjamin Baier. But the third division club Schweinfurt did not allow themselves to be discouraged and equalized in the 22nd minute thanks to Nico Grimbs, who was able to capitalize on precise preparatory work from Joshua Endres. Shortly afterwards, in the 36th minute, Eren Bozan put the hosts back in front after former Schweinfurt keeper Maximilian Weisbäcker reacted too late. The half-time score of 2-1 for Aschaffenburg promised a thrilling second half.
Change and turnaround
Schweinfurt reacted at halftime with a change of coach: Manuel Wintzheimer and Kristian Böhnlein came on for Tim Latteier and Nico Grimbs. The change paid off as Michael Dellinger equalized in the 59th minute. After this turbulent phase, the game lost some control. In the 90th minute, Nils Piwernetz from Schweinfurt was shown a yellow-red card, which further weakened the team in the final minutes.
So the decision had to be made on penalties. Here every Aschaffenburg shooter was able to sink his penalty in the first round. Schweinfurt's first three shooters also scored, but Devin Angleberger was denied by Aschaffenburg goalkeeper Max Grün in the second half, which gave the hosts the decisive advantage. Niklas Borger converted the last penalty and catapulted Aschaffenburg into the quarter-finals of the competition. Possible opponents there are clubs like TSV 1860 Munich, who recently defeated FV Illertissen 3-1.
