Augsburg 2025: Citizen survey reveals satisfaction and construction sites!
The 2025 citizen survey in Augsburg shows a positive picture for the city and its residents. With a record turnout of 7,087 people casting their votes between July and August 2023, the first results have been published. The Office of Statistics and Urban Research has been conducting the survey, which is carried out every two years, since 2003 and this year focused particularly on urban development.
The feedback from those surveyed reveals a high level of satisfaction with the quality of life in Augsburg. The garbage collection, the local recreation opportunities, the dining options and the good shopping opportunities were rated particularly positively. Nevertheless, there are also critical voices who note that the public toilets, schools and daycare centers as well as the cycle path network are in particular need of improvement. Youth leisure facilities, family support centers and intercultural offerings are of great importance to citizens.
Urban development in focus
A key finding of the survey is that green spaces, trees, cleanliness and an effective waste system are highlighted as essential elements of the city center. Many respondents also see the history of the city of Augsburg as a big plus. Current topics such as street festivals and quality of life are also very popular and were consistently rated positively. However, there is one downside: the land and real estate prices as well as rental costs are receiving significant criticism.
Citizens named important aspects of urban development that should be addressed in the future. In particular, housing, education and training were identified as priority issues. Concrete projects such as the greening of the town hall square, the design of the train station forecourt and the protection of the city forest are already generating very concrete interest among local residents. In contrast, concepts such as neighborhood development in the theater district and the “Little House” in the course of the State Theater renovation did not receive the desired approval.
Comparison with other cities
At the same time, the latest data from the coordinated survey on quality of life in German cities, which took place in autumn 2024, adds an interesting aspect. This comparison makes it possible to measure the quality of life in Augsburg with other cities such as Aachen, Gießen or Gießen. 500 randomly selected people were surveyed in order to get a precise picture of satisfaction in different cities. This methodology has been actively implemented by the DG Regio since 2004.
