Tragedy at Lake Sylvenstein: 79-year-old drowns while swimming!

A tragic accident occurred today at Lake Sylvenstein in Lenggries, Bavaria. A 79-year-old man suddenly sank while swimming and could not be rescued. According to Cityreport, his wife alerted other bathers around 10:50 a.m., who then informed the Oberland integrated control center. The incident occurred on the eastern shore of the popular swimming lake.

The search operation, which was quickly initiated and supported by the local water rescue service, was only able to rescue the man dead from the water around midday. The emergency doctor then pronounced the man dead. His wife was looked after on site by a crisis intervention team as she had to witness the accident. The first measures to clarify the incident were initiated by the Bad Tölz police station, while the ongoing criminal investigation service of the Weilheim criminal police station took over the further investigation. So far there is no evidence of foul play and investigations into exactly what happened are ongoing.

Alarming trend in swimming accidents

This accident joins worrying statistics: According to the DLRG, a total of at least 15 people in Germany drowned in swimming accidents last weekend. It is the highest number of deaths this summer and is considered one of the deadliest weekends in the last decade. This increasing number is alarming as the DLRG has already recorded 411 drownings in 2024, an increase compared to the previous year.

Climate change and an increase in hot summer days appear to increase the risk of swimming accidents. DLRG spokesman Martin Holzhause is therefore calling for the expansion of guarded seaside resorts nationwide in order to avoid such tragedies. There were several fatal swimming accidents in Bavaria, particularly during the Pentecost holidays, which underlines the urgency of preventive measures.

The events at Sylvensteinsee once again make it clear how dangerous swimming can be. It is important to take care of both yourself and the safety of others. Our thoughts are with the relatives of the deceased during this difficult time.
