Bamberg district: Large majority for a forward-looking sustainability strategy!
Something is happening in the Bamberg district: On October 20, 2025, the district council adopted a comprehensive sustainability strategy with a large majority. This initiative, which has been developed since September 2024 in close collaboration with various social actors and under the leadership of the Education Office, aims to ensure the long-term quality of life for current and future generations. District Administrator Johann Kalb emphasizes how important joint action is for shaping the future of the region, because “there is something to be done” when it comes to the challenges of the coming years.
The strategy is a real success: It includes five central areas of action, which are divided into 26 strategic goals, 46 operational goals and 94 concrete measures. This not only sets a clear direction, but also assigns responsibility: responsibilities, resources, time periods and indicators have been defined for each measure. The district administration has a coherent concept in hand that relies on regular monitoring to check progress and continuously develop the strategy. Bamberg Meine Stadt reports that this dynamic approach was also used by Dr. Christian Lorenz, head of the education office, who describes the strategy as a flexible control instrument.
A comprehensive approach for the future
The sustainability strategy is based on the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals and goes beyond administration by also inspiring communities in the district. It covers central areas that are relevant for all citizens:
- Soziale Gerechtigkeit und Bildung
- Gesundheit und Demokratiesicherung
- Klimaschutz, Energie und nachhaltige Mobilität
- Wirtschaft, Tourismus und Digitalisierung
- Konsumverhalten und globale Verantwortung
This broad objective is also reflected in public relations work, which aims to make the content of the strategy visible and understandable. During the development process, the basics and initial measures were presented in the plenary session, which ensured a lively exchange and a high level of participation. The entire process was moderated by Jörg Hiller, who brought together various perspectives from science, society and administration to create a sound basis for this important strategy. Webecho Bamberg emphasizes that the foundations for implementation were laid in October 2022 with the signing of the model resolution of the 2030 Agenda.
The commitment of institutions such as Engagement Global and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) ensures that the strategy does not just remain on paper, but rather serves as a living hinge for the networked and sustainable further development of the Bamberg district. The complete sustainability strategy is available online and can be viewed by anyone interested, so that all citizens can actively participate in shaping the future.
