Melanie Huml: Your return to Bamberg as mayor?
A breath of fresh air is blowing through Bamberg: Melanie Huml, Bavaria's former health minister, announced her candidacy for the office of mayor in a video message from the CSU Bamberg. In doing so, she brings new dynamism and commitment to her hometown, where she was born in 1975. “Bamberg is my home and I am ready to take action,” emphasizes Huml in her video, making it clear that she wants to listen to the wishes and needs of the citizens.
The decision does not come as a complete surprise, as the candidacy was already considered likely. However, Huml wanted to avoid a long election campaign and is relying on targeted preparation. The official nomination is still pending, but approval for the CSU politician can already be seen as certain. The Bamberg City CSU district association will decide on this in the fall. Huml is supported by prominent voices, such as Prime Minister Markus Söder, who has already spoken out in favor of her.
A look at the competition
However, there will be no easy competition in the upcoming election, which will take place in March 2026. Incumbent Andreas Starke from the SPD is no longer running, which opens the race. Huml is being challenged, among others, by SPD city councilor Sebastian Niedermaier and Green Party member Jonas Glüsenkamp. Nevertheless, CSU district leader Gerhard Seitz is optimistic about the future and highlights Huml's large network, which stretches from Munich to Berlin.
Bamberg in focus
But what makes Bamberg so special? The city is known not only for its impressive Imperial Cathedral, but also for its vibrant beer culture and numerous traditional breweries. Visitors can fully enjoy the charming old town as all attractions are well connected.
To make it easier for visitors and locals to explore, there is even a Bamberg app, available for €4.49 in the Play Store or iTunes Store. This offers information about the main sights as well as exciting stories from the city's history and ensures that everyone hungry for knowledge gets their money's worth.
With her background in medicine and her family depth, married and mother of two sons, Melanie Huml brings practical experience and a good feel for what moves people in Bamberg. Their goal of listening and connecting different perspectives could initiate a new design process for the city and bring a breath of fresh air into political and cultural events.
