Important commuter route in Franconia: rail traffic closed for two weeks!
Deutsche Bahn has once again taken on a big task! The four-track expansion of the commuter line between Nuremberg and Bamberg, a central connection in Franconia, is rapidly approaching completion. From August 25th to September 9th, the last section between Forchheim and Bamberg will be closed for necessary work Northern Bavaria reported. This means for commuters and travelers: things are getting a little more turbulent!
During these two weeks, regional and S-Bahn passengers will have to use replacement buses. Fortunately, there are express and express bus lines between Forchheim and Bamberg to make the transfer as pleasant as possible. If you travel by train, you should be prepared for a longer travel time. The ICE trains between Munich/Nuremberg and Berlin will be rerouted via Augsburg and Würzburg, which will result in an additional travel time of around 100 minutes. This also means that there will be no stops in Coburg, Bamberg and Erlangen.
Final construction work on the home stretch
The current expansion is part of a comprehensive project that not only includes 15 kilometers of tracks and 20 kilometers of overhead lines, but also new barrier-free platforms at the Buttenheim, Hirschaid and Strullendorf stops. A new road bridge over the tracks on federal highway 505 is also being planned and is expected to be completed by May, while a railway bridge on Jurastraße in Altendorf is also being built. The works that German railway described as “on the home stretch”, are scheduled to be completed in September 2023.
All of this contributes to the creation of a four-track rail infrastructure covering a total of 64 kilometers, which should significantly increase the stability and punctuality of train operations. In addition to the planned work, there are also other construction sites, such as the route between Munich and Ingolstadt, which will be rerouted from August 15th to 25th.
Travel information for commuters
It is particularly important that Deutsche Bahn encourages travelers to find out about current connections before starting their journey. The information portals such as bahn.de and DB Navigator are available for this. It would be a shame if the planned trip or commute became a stress factor due to lack of information.
The four-track line expansion between Nuremberg and Bamberg will soon be history! With a little patience and the right information, passengers can look forward to an improved travel experience in the near future.
