Ten years of friends instead of strangers”: celebrating diversity in Bamberg!
In autumn 2025 the club will... Friend instead of stranger e.V. celebrate its tenth anniversary in Bamberg. Under the motto “Together for tolerance and diversity”, the association focuses on a series of events that enable encounters and promote cohesion in a diverse society. The goal of this series is clear: to declare war on racism and exclusion and instead to focus on respect, empathy and humanity.
A colorful program of cabaret, readings, experience reports and open dialogue formats is planned, all to raise awareness of social issues and broaden different perspectives. This initiative is supported thanks to crowdfunding from VR Bank Bamberg-Forchheim, the Adalbert Raps Foundation and the German Foundation for Commitment and Volunteering.
Next event: Sea rescue in the Mediterranean
The next event will take place in the “Blue Frieda” on Friday, October 17, 2025 at 6 p.m. With a report from a sea rescuer, participants can gain deeper insights into the challenges and reality of sea rescue in the Mediterranean. The event promises personal impressions and an open exchange about the political situation and moral responsibility. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
This exchange about sea rescue is particularly relevant today, when questions about responsibility in refugee policy continue to arise. Many Germans find themselves in a post-materialistic state, characterized by the search for self-realization and complex identity-finding processes, such as German voice described in detail. In the NGO scene, the commitment to sea rescue has many faces, from adventurers and do-gooders to ideologues and profiteers.
Identity politics and its challenges
But what is behind the discussion about identity politics and how does it influence social trends? The Federal Agency for Civic Education explains that identity politics has both advantages and disadvantages. While it makes specific injustices visible and promotes awareness of multiple discrimination, it can also lead to people being pressed into prefabricated identity constructs and individual differences being pushed into the background.
In an increasingly diverse society, dealing with identity is a hotly debated topic. Left-wing and right-wing political approaches differ significantly in their understanding of identity: while right-wing identity politics favors clear identity constructs, the left-wing position is more empirical and focuses on specific experiences. Against this background, it becomes clear how important it is to have an open dialogue and to increase awareness of the diversity of human identity.
Overall, it shows that the association Freund instead of Fremd e.V. not only sets an example against exclusion, but also creates a space in which different voices can be heard. The events are an opportunity to talk to each other and develop a better understanding of the challenges of our time.
