BBC Bayreuth: Strong comeback, but Phoenix Hagen remains victorious!

The BBC Bayreuth had to admit defeat against Phoenix Hagen in the important game of the BARMER 2nd Basketball Bundesliga ProA on October 25, 2025. The game ended with a final score of 88:74 despite a strong comeback in the second half. While Bayreuth was behind 53:33 after a weak start in the first two quarters, the team around head coach Florian Wedell showed an impressive reaction in the third and fourth quarters.

The third quarter in particular, in which Bayreuth dominated 20:17, gave the fans reason to hope. Bayreuth's top scorer was Rayshawn Mart with 18 points, followed by Nat Diallo with 13 points and 7 rebounds and Moritz Plescher, who scored 12 points. Despite these efforts, Hagen's late takeover, led by Marcus Graves, who contributed 17 points, brought Bayreuth back down to earth.

A game full of ups and downs

The start to the game was anything but rosy, as Bayreuth quickly found itself behind 0:8 and later 2:10. The rebounds were a crucial issue; At halftime, Hagen had collected 29 rebounds, while Bayreuth only managed 15. BB Bayreuth was able to regain control over the course of the second half, but Hagen's late long-range goals ultimately tipped the scales. Coach Wedell commented on the performance after the game: “The positive reaction in the second half was there, but we urgently need to improve our starting performance.”

The possibility of improving the current record of 2:8 points is now at stake as Bayreuth has the next four home games. The previous game against the Artland Dragons was just as exciting. There, too, Bayreuth fought until the last second, but ultimately lost in overtime 93:96. In particular, the weak three-point rate of just 14% in the first half was another hammer for Bayreuth.

Basketball boom in Germany

Basketball is very popular in Germany. Around 68 million people are familiar with the sport. The umbrella organization of the highest German basketball league, the easyCredit BBL, has had 16 teams since the 2003/2004 season. While FC Bayern Munich won the championship title in the 2023/2024 season, the lower leagues are also flourishing. The German Basketball Association has recently seen an increase in membership numbers, while the national team won the World Cup title in 2023 and became European champions in 2025, led by MVP Dennis Schröder.

With these successes in the background, BBC Bayreuth is also looking for ways to overcome the current challenges. The next games will show whether Bayreuth can learn from their mistakes. While the team is struggling, the fans are behind them and want a positive turnaround in the current season.
