Young faces in Bayreuth: AfD presents mayor candidates for 2026!
There is a lot of movement in political circles in the city of Bayreuth before the mayoral election in 2026. Two special candidates have caused a stir in recent weeks: Maximilian Maul from the AfD and Sabine Steininger from the Greens. Both bring different perspectives and visions for the future of the city.
Maximilian Maul, only 23 years old, was unanimously nominated as his party's candidate for the mayoral election on July 13, 2023. Bayreuther Tagblatt reports that the parliamentary speaker studied economics and law in Bayreuth and originally comes from Weimar, a city that is structurally similar to Bayreuth. Maul is particularly critical of the city's financial situation and calls for the creation of a special economic zone to provide tax relief for new companies and create jobs.
Maul's challenges and goals
Particularly noticeable in his election campaign is the demand for Bayreuth to be directly connected to the ICE network, a circumstance that he sees as a location risk for commuters and students. Maul would also like to initiate a reform of the city administration in order to set clearer priorities. He plans to actively promote generational change in politics with his candidacy.
Tobias Matthias Peterka also wants to return to the city council with him to ensure that the AfD is represented there with at least three MPs. Another prominent name is Mario Schulze, 26 years old, who criticizes the district's spending policy decisions and advocates business-friendly policies.
Green candidate with experience
On the other side is Sabine Steininger, who was officially nominated as a candidate for the Greens on July 10, 2025. How on the Green Party website can be read, Steininger has been active in the city council for 16 years and has led the green parliamentary group since 2013. Her nomination stands for competence and the will to redesign Bayreuth. Ulf Boderius from the district executive committee said that the Greens want to win the town hall in 2026.
Steininger herself has a strong interest in becoming mayor and relies on trust and continuity. She would also like to provide new impetus in the election campaign, with management under Lasse Heisler, a representative of the Green Youth.
Political situation in Bayreuth
The race for the mayoral election in 2026 raises the question of how the local political landscape will develop. It remains to be seen which other candidates will emerge from the various parties and how the NN notes.
One thing is certain, however: the citizens of Bayreuth can look forward to an exciting election campaign that not only tests the candidates' political ideologies, but also raises the question of what changes the city actually needs.
