RW21 roof terrace reopened after renovation – Bayreuth is celebrating!

The roof terrace of the RW21 city library in Bayreuth has received a remarkable makeover and now shines in new splendor. On August 26, 2025, the outdoor area, which had been treasured for decades, was ceremoniously reopened after a year of renovation work. Mayor Thomas Ebersberger was among the invited guests when the terrace reopened its doors. What could be nicer than enjoying the view with a cup of coffee?

The new roof terrace covers around 120 square meters and offers space for 32 visitors. Here you can enjoy a diverse selection of hot and cold drinks, snacks and tempting cakes in Lesecafé21. This new equipment, such as the installed wooden floorboards and a stylish three-part marquise, not only ensures an attractive look, but also comfort and protection from the elements.

Renovation work and challenges

Unfortunately, the renovation of the terrace last year led to increased noise, which temporarily affected the operation of the reading café. In order to ensure that the guests had a pleasant stay, the city library provided free earplugs. “We are happy that everything is now over and our visitors can enjoy the new terrace,” said deputy library director Heike Enders.

The city library itself is not only a place for education, but also a lively meeting place for citizens. In addition to non-fiction and specialist literature, it offers a wide range of entertainment and promotes reading culture, especially among children and young people. Users can also borrow e-books, films, games and much more. The return to normality is welcomed by many in the city, because for many people the library has a high status in the cultural and educational landscape.

A look into the future

The reopening of the roof terrace celebrates an important milestone in the RW21 City Library's past renovation project, which not only improved the infrastructure but also provides an opportunity to promote local culture and community. It remains to be hoped that the new offerings and the fresh ambience will drive loan numbers up again, as many libraries are more than ever faced with the challenge of reinventing themselves.

The Bayreuth City Library shows what modern library work can look like and ensures that the needs of the local population are the focus. Visit the reopened roof terrace of RW21 and see for yourself the new possibilities this place has to offer!
