Bundesliga scandal: Bayern victory despite VAR glitch causes outrage!
In the opening game of the Bundesliga on August 24th, 2025, FC Bayern Munich hosted Rasenballsport Leipzig and celebrated an impressive 6-0 victory. But the result is overshadowed by an upset: an incorrectly taken free kick from Leipzig and the subsequent discussion about the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) cause heated debates. Loud n-tv Castello Lukeba took the free kick illegally by dribbling instead of simply playing the ball. This faux pas initially went unnoticed by referee Florian Badstübner and his team.
During the game, Bayern captain Joshua Kimmich received a yellow card after he protested about the incident. Five minutes after a controversial goal by Antonio Nusa (RB Leipzig), Badstübner decided to check the scene with the VAR. What was surprising, however, was that the VAR, which usually only intervenes in certain clear situations, should not have intervened in this case ran reported.
Breaking the rules causes confusion
The resistance shown by Kimmich and his teammates led to Badstübner questioning the VAR. His reference to the irregular free kick execution caused confusion. According to the DFB rules, the free kick could have been retaken, but in fact Bayern should have been awarded a free kick at the site of the offense. “The VAR correctly noted this, but the spectators rightly noted that this situation should have been resolved better on the field,” commented DFB referee spokesman Alex Feuerherdt n-tv reported.
Despite this violation of the rules, Bayern's 6-0 victory remains. An objection by the people of Leipzig would have been impossible, even if Badstübner had not made the decision correctly. This particular situation during the game raises questions about the possible use of the VAR. In general, this person is only authorized to intervene in the case of clear violations, as in Bundesliga regulations is clearly defined.
A controversial use of VAR
The current debate shows the challenges associated with the use of VAR in the Bundesliga. The VAR is intended to support referees through modern technology and increase decision-making accuracy, but this assessment raises questions when decisions are not correctly implemented on the pitch. The players' passionate protests and subsequent VAR intervention illuminated the weaknesses in the system, something both fans and experts are debating.
The Bundesliga has repeatedly struggled with the acceptance of the technology since the introduction of VAR in the 2017/2018 season. The incident at the weekend will certainly not be the last in a series of discussions surrounding the integration of the video assistant into German football.
