E-bike accident in Cham: 81-year-old falls on an oil-contaminated road!

An accident involving an e-bike caused a stir in the municipality of Cham on Friday morning, July 11, 2025. Shortly after 10:15 a.m., a hydraulic hose on a semi-trailer vehicle burst on Knonauerstrasse, causing a large amount of hydraulic oil to spill onto the road. This slippery oil trail caused an 81-year-old e-bike rider to fall and injure himself.

The injured man received immediate medical attention and was then transported to the hospital by the Zug emergency services. While the patient was being rescued and the street was being cleaned, traffic had to be routed past the accident site in a single lane, which temporarily put a strain on local traffic conditions. Such accidents are not only of local concern, but also shed light on general traffic safety, especially when using e-bikes.

Pedelec accidents on the rise

A look at the current accident statistics highlights a worrying development in the area of e-bike use. In 2023, a total of 23,658 Pedelec drivers had accidents in Germany, which represents a dramatic increase from the comparable figures from 2014, when only 2,223 Pedelec users were involved in accidents. The number of people killed in these accidents rose from 39 in 2014 to 188 in 2023. These figures come from ADAC and underline the growing danger in road traffic.

It is interesting that the age structure of Pedelec accident victims has changed. In 2014, more than half of those affected were over 65 years old, but by 2023 this proportion has fallen to just a third. Statistics show that almost every third accident victim is now under 45 years old. This means that younger drivers are increasingly involved in traffic accidents, while the total number of Pedelec accidents continues to rise. According to Destatis, an average Pedelec accident with personal injury in 2023 killed an average of 7.9 drivers.

An important age consideration

The age-related risk of injury from falls remains a central issue. Our older citizens are particularly at risk because the likelihood of serious or even fatal injuries is often higher if they fall. Another aspect is that e-bikes are becoming increasingly popular. In 2022, 15.5% of households in Germany had at least one Pedelec, compared to only 3.4% in 2014. This could contribute to an increase in the number of accidents as a larger number of riders are on e-bikes, which the ADAC experts also confirm.

In conclusion, it can be said that the danger in road traffic and the increase in Pedelec accidents in recent years cannot be ignored. Awareness of the risks, especially on slippery roads, is more important than ever. The combination of technological progress and growing number of users requires us to address safety on our roads more than ever.
