District Administrator Löffler welcomes 850 international students to Cham!
A noticeable international atmosphere permeates the Technology Campus Cham, where District Administrator Franz Löffler proudly welcomed 60 new international students on July 7, 2025. Over 850 students from 30 nations enrich the campus and deepen their knowledge in exciting areas such as artificial intelligence, additive manufacturing and robotics. “There is something going on here,” says Löffler enthusiastically, emphasizing that around 30% of international graduates plan to stay in the region. This is a positive development that not only advances education but also the economy.
Imagine having the opportunity to not only learn in an innovative environment, but also to come into contact with people from a wide variety of cultures. This is made possible by the dedicated course leader Melanie Wittmann together with lecturer Stefanie Dierlmeier, who are actively committed to integration and intercultural understanding. Many students, like Selpa Nalam Kandathin from India, already have plans to stay in the region after their studies and contribute to the local community.
Current challenges and solutions
Despite the positive exchange, there are challenges. The housing problem is particularly important. Some students arrive early from cities like Nuremberg to ensure they can arrive at their events on time. To counteract this dilemma, District Administrator Löffler has announced the creation of new student apartments, which are urgently needed to meet the needs of students.
The establishment of the Technology Campus Cham in such a central location, close to companies and with excellent study conditions, has put the region at the center of Europe. The recent opening of the border with the Czech Republic has given this development an additional boost. Expansion measures are also planned for the technology transfer centers for digital production, additive manufacturing and intelligent robotics. This means that Cham is becoming increasingly attractive not only as an educational location, but also as an innovation center.
A new head at the top
The new head of the Technology Campus, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Aumer brings a breath of fresh air. The 41-year-old comes from Rettenbach and has a farm with eleven cows, which he sees as a balance to the university. Aumer, who studied electrical engineering and received his doctorate, attaches great importance to practical cooperation with business and sees innovation as the future of the university. His personal story and his close connection to his homeland reflect his commitment to the region and its development.
As the developments at the Cham Technology Campus show, the area of artificial intelligence also plays a key role in modern university education. The DAAD recently presented interesting insights into the practical use of AI at universities. Best practices and challenges that are important for students and teachers were discussed in online seminars. The successful integration of AI into the curricula is a current topic that does not lose its importance at the Cham Technology Campus. The students are already using AI tools for various applications such as text, graphics or presentation creation and are thus actively contributing to the discussion.
The diverse opportunities available in Cham are not only a benefit for the students, but also for the entire region. With the upcoming developments and international orientation, the Cham Technology Campus shows that it is on the right track and opens up many new perspectives.
