Schumer fights against Trump's tariff policy attacks on Europe!

The world is looking intently towards Greenland and the USA, where a serious conflict has broken out over the future administration of this strategically important region. On January 18, 2026, Chuck Schumer, the Democratic minority leader in the US Senate, announced that he would take decisive action against President Donald Trump's threatened tariffs. These tariffs, which are to be imposed against Germany and seven other European NATO countries from February, are intended to put pressure on European allies to force a purchase of Greenland. Schumer described these tariff plans as harmful to the US economy and criticized them as price gougers. “It’s time to stop this nonsense,” said Schumer, who already plans to introduce legislation to block the tariffs and prevent further damage to the American economy and the European community. NP Coburg reports that despite the Democratic minority in the Senate, some Republicans are also critical of Trump's plan.

Trump himself has repeatedly reiterated his interest in a US takeover of Greenland. He described the defense of Greenland as “two dog sleds” and stressed that the US needs the area for its national security. A takeover by the USA would not only take into account an economic aspect, but also strategic reasons, such as access to critical minerals. However, Greenland is a self-governing territory of Denmark, and the government there has made it clear that it “cannot accept” a US takeover in any way. USA Today reported that Denmark and other European countries have already set clear limits on Trump's claims.

NATO in focus

NATO itself now sees itself under pressure. Characterized by internal conflicts, people are less prepared for the threats posed by Trump. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has so far remained silent about the US President's statements, while Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is warning of a US military attack on NATO allies. According to DW, NATO's credibility is becoming increasingly questionable due to the lack of clear strategies against such internal threats. Experts warn that the situation could put a strain on relations within NATO.

The European states have clearly spoken out against Trump's ideas. Among others, politicians like Danish MEP Anders Vistisen are calling for a decisive response to the US president's threats, while others, like Per Clausen, are suggesting suspending transatlantic tariffs until the US backs down from Greenland. The Greenlanders themselves also appear determined to strengthen their defense efforts under NATO auspices and reiterate that they will decide their own affairs.

At a time when geopolitical tensions are rising, the conflict over Greenland could have far-reaching consequences for NATO and the international order. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop and whether a serious economic or military conflict will actually occur. The next few months could be crucial in determining what relations between the US and its European allies will look like.
