The mayors are calling for a fundamental reform of social benefits, which now make up over 95 percent of the district budget. A further increase in district levies could jeopardize the ability of municipal budgets to be approved and have a lasting impact on the municipalities' ability to act.
An appeal for responsibility
In their joint position, the mayors have advocated making savings in the district budget of at least 100 million euros, instead of the 15 million euros identified so far. The district council president, Thomas Schwarzenberger, was informed in an urgent letter of the load limit that many communities are already reaching or even exceeding.
In addition to the immediate financial concerns, mayors also recognize the need for fair and sustainable financing for the future. A rethink of the legal regulations is urgently needed in order to reduce financial pressure in the long term.
