Here in Germany, the little dachshunds are no longer just found on the sofa, but are also conquering the racetracks! Exciting dachshund races are on the program in many cities. For example, in May, the whole of Ludwigsburg turns into a paradise for dachshund lovers when the well-known Ludwigsburg Dachshund Race takes place. It starts on May 24th, 2025! The event takes place as part of the horse market and attracts numerous dachshund owners and their four-legged friends.

Participants can look forward to a comprehensive program: starting at 12:30 p.m. the start numbers will be assigned and the dachshunds will be checked for their racing qualities. At 1:30 p.m. there is a welcome on the tournament field, which features a dachshund parade. And from 1:45 p.m. things get really busy: the qualifying runs start and the winners can receive their prizes at 4:00 p.m. at the latest. There are various classes for participants, including juniors, seniors and an open class.

Did you know that the little dachshunds can run around at speeds of around 15 to 20 km/h? A particularly fast dachshund named Fiete even reached 25 km/h! For comparison: a greyhound can reach a whopping 70 km/h, while a Labrador can reach speeds of up to 35 km/h. Dachshunds tend to be the leisurely sprinters among dogs, but that doesn't make them any less lovable!

Another dachshund race will take place shortly after Ludwigsburg, on June 1, 2025, in Melpitz, Lower Saxony. This year the dachshund race there is celebrating its 20th edition and is expected to attract around 2,000 visitors. So things remain exciting in the dachshund community!

Family events and dachshund fun

The Ludwigsburg dachshund race has not only established itself as a sporting highlight, but is also a real family event. In addition to the thrilling races, a varied supporting program ensures that the whole family gets their money's worth. The four-legged friends can also relax in the dachshund spa after the race and cool down after all the hustle and bustle. Your physical well-being is taken care of and a veterinarian is also on site in case of any emergencies.

If you own a dachshund and would like to register it for the event, you can do so via the Dachshundklub Württemberg and Hohenzollern or register there by email. The participation fee is a moderate 8 euros and admission for spectators is free.
