Three churches in the diocese of Regensburg are elevated to minster status!

In a solemn ceremony, Bishop Dr. Rudolf Voderholzer elevated three churches in the diocese of Regensburg to minster status at the request of the local priests. This event marks an important moment for the religious community in the region and shows appreciation for the cultural significance of these places of worship.

The selected churches are:

  • Pfarrkirche St. Johannes in Dingolfing
  • Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt in Deggendorf
  • Pfarrkirche St. Anna in Gotteszell (ehemalige Klosterkirche)

The title “Münster”, which is derived from the Latin “monasterium”, is given to churches that have a high significance for religious life. This is often achieved through architectural and artistic qualities, the trans-parish significance of relics or holy images, and valuable furnishings with sacred music. Bishop Voderholzer has called for such applications to be submitted in the official gazette from May 16, 2025 in order to honor and publicize the treasures of the diocese.

Festive pontifical masses

A special highlight will be the festive pontifical mass, which will take place on three different dates:

  • 3. Oktober 2025 um 10 Uhr in St. Johannes, Dingolfing
  • 12. Oktober 2025 um 10 Uhr in Mariä Himmelfahrt, Deggendorf
  • 16. November 2025 um 10 Uhr in St. Anna, Gotteszell

On the same days there will also be a solemn pontifical vespers at 3 p.m. Such festive occasions attract many believers and promote a sense of community within church communities.

Tradition and distinction

Honorary episcopal titles, such as that of the cathedral, are a valuable distinction in the Roman Catholic Church. This honor is given to churches that stand out for their special achievements in the religious and cultural life of the diocese. Such honorary titles also have a long tradition in the history of the Diocese of Regensburg, which underlines the importance of the churches for society. The awarding of such titles varies according to the practices of the dioceses and at the same time shows the close connection between the spiritual institutions. More information about episcopal honorary titles can be found on Wikipedia.

This proclamation is no coincidence: Bishop Dr. Rudolf Voderholzer showed a good knack for promoting church life. He also took part in the 30th district pilgrimage of the Catholic German Women's Association in Hahnbach, where over 1,000 believers celebrated the pontifical service and expressed the solidarity between the communities. Such events, which were also covered in the Sulzbach-Rosenberger Zeitung, are a reminder of how lively religious life is in the region.

The elevation of three churches to cathedral status is a visible sign of appreciation and an incentive for the communities to continue to actively shape spiritual and cultural life.
