In Deggendorf, the star restaurant KOOK 36 has closed its doors. Operator Daniel Klein filed for bankruptcy on June 28, 2025, just two weeks after the restaurant lost its prestigious Michelin star. The restaurant, which originally opened in Moos in 2018, received its first Michelin star in 2021 and moved to Deggendorf in 2022. Since then, KOOK 36 has enjoyed great popularity, with guests able to choose between 4- and 7-course meals costing between 124 and 160 euros. The number of guests and high expectations of quality and service are the ups and downs in top gastronomy. The challenges of a star restaurant
In gastronomy, the Michelin star is often a double-edged sword. While it opens a door to the culinary elite, the expectations and financial burdens that come with it can become overwhelming for many establishments. A study found that almost half of New York's Michelin-starred restaurants were forced to close by 2019, while only a fifth of top restaurants without a star suffered the same fate. Daniel Klein does not see the closure of KOOK 36 as a final farewell, but as a turning point. “Despite the difficulties, I plan to look to the future and not give up,” he explains.
