New collection center in Nördlingen: Culture is experienced in a new, environmentally conscious way!
A significant step for cultural tourism in Nördlingen: This Museum KulturLand Ries has opened its new collection center. Located in the “Krater Forum”, the building covers an impressive 3,800 square meters and will provide space for more than 50,000 museum objects that were previously housed in scattered storage rooms. These neither met modern conservation standards nor did they provide the necessary security for the valuable exhibits.
Particularly noteworthy is the careful revision process that each individual object undergoes. They are cleaned, treated for conservation and checked for their collection value. Objects that can no longer be preserved or do not correspond to the collection mandate will be excluded from the collection.
Sustainability in focus
The opening of the collection center is not only a highlight for Nördlingen, but also an environmentally conscious project. The center will be operated in a carbon-neutral manner and the use of existing spaces will avoid the need for new buildings, which makes both environmental and financial sense. The climate and resource-saving orientation fits well with the goals of the Swabia district and the Donau-Ries district who want to become climate neutral by 2030.
The museum landscape is also working on a museum-specific sustainability certification, which should be presented by the end of 2025. The aim of the initiative is to strengthen the climate protection and sustainability activities of museums. The project includes the development of minimum ecological standards and the publication of practical recommendations for museums. In this way, sustainability becomes measurable and permanently anchored in museum work in the long term.
Future exhibition perspectives
Although the collection center is not designed for regular visitor traffic, those responsible plan to increase the visibility of the collection. This could represent an opportunity for many culture lovers in the region to learn more about the material and intangible heritage of the Nördlinger Ries, which spans several centuries.
Overall, the opening of the collection center shows the ambition to combine culture and environmental protection. Those responsible are approaching the matter with a good hand - this promises exciting developments for the region.
