Idyll at the Koi pond: Aßlinger Garden full of secrets and devotion!
Mike Wierz and Jürgen Wehr have created a green paradise for themselves in picturesque Aßling. On 900 square meters of blooming splendor there are not only lovingly designed flower beds, but also a koi pond, which regularly benefits the plants with freshly changed water. The creative mind behind this garden, which features a koi pond and a pretty gazebo, is 70-year-old Mike, while 58-year-old Jürgen is considered a horticultural expert. Together they dedicate an impressive 30 hours a week to this retreat. As Merkur reports, it is the connection to nature that drives both men - growing up in the country, they feel in their garden like at home.
What makes your garden special? In addition to the unique koi pond, which is supplied with oxygen by an effective pump system, it is above all the variety of native plants that characterize the image here. Mike and Jürgen consciously chose bee-friendly species that attract wild bees and bumblebees. These include perennials, herbs and particularly nectar-rich plants. This selection is not only a feast for the eyes, but also actively contributes to the protection of pollinators, which Bund Naturschutz underlines. Great plants for bees include buckthorn, privet and blackthorn, while culinary herbs such as sage and zucchini are also welcome.
Bee-friendliness as a guiding principle
When you look at the floral highlights of the garden, it's easy to fall into raptures - a large buddleia with its bright flowers not only attracts the human eye. By planning and maintaining their garden, Wierz and Wehr make a remarkable contribution to a healthy ecosystem. In this context, experts from My Beautiful Garden recommend creating a mix of different plant species in order to promote the diversity of pollinators. While honey bees value a wide range of food sources, many wild bees rely on specific plants. A smart move by Mike and Jürgen to fill the garden with plants like this!
In addition to the bee-friendly flowers, various fruit trees and wild shrubs are also part of the garden concept. These include, among others, sweet cherries and hawthorn. The goal is clear: create a food source for the bees while enjoying a beautiful garden. The two also strategically plan to mow lawns only twice a year so that the wildflowers can bloom - a real win-win situation for people and nature.
Open Garden Day – A celebration for nature lovers
On June 29th, all garden lovers have the opportunity to visit this little Eden: Mike and Jürgen are taking part in the Bavaria-wide “Open Garden Day”. Here, anyone interested can immerse themselves in their green realm and be inspired. Anyone who has ever strolled through this lovingly designed garden will quickly understand why Mike and Jürgen don't regret living here for a day. A visit is definitely worth it - and perhaps the visitors will also develop a new feel for the fascinating world of bee-friendly plants!
