Horrible crash on the B388: driver ignores red light!

A traffic accident that happened on Saturday evening, June 22nd, 2025, around 6:15 p.m. on the B388 near Erding caused heated emotions, but fortunately no injuries were reported. A 40-year-old driver from the Freising district, who was driving a Mazda, ignored a red light and crashed into a 19-year-old driver from Austria who was driving a Seat through the intersection when the light was green. This caused material damage of around 5,500 euros, as reported by the Erding police station ( ed-live.de ).

Although the incident was avoidable, there was still material damage. Witnesses to the accident are called upon to come forward to clarify what happened. The Mazda driver's misconduct could well be a lesson for future drivers, as road safety is a hot topic, as current statistics show.

Accident statistics at a glance

In 2023 there were around 2.5 million road traffic accidents in Germany. The majority of these accidents involve property damage, while there has been little significant change in personal injury since the 1950s ( statista.com ). Given the enormous volume of traffic, such figures could be worrying, as the “Vision Zero” goal of no traffic deaths by 2050 is in the offing. The EU transport ministers have set themselves the goal of drastically reducing the number of accidents. There were 2,839 traffic deaths in Germany in 2023, which is a positive development compared to the almost 20,000 deaths in 1970, but reducing driving behavior remains a challenge.

Another incident that raises current road safety concerns occurred on the same road on Monday. An 18-year-old driver from the Erding district left the road while overtaking a slow-moving truck and rolled over several times in an adjacent field. She was also very lucky, remained uninjured and was able to free herself from the twisted vehicle. Nevertheless, the estimated material damage of around 30,000 euros must make those responsible sit up and take notice ( sueddeutsche.de ).

A look at the causes

A critical look at the most common causes of accidents shows that insufficient distance, excessive speed and driving under the influence of alcohol are among the main culprits. In 2023, there were approximately 15,700 alcohol-related personal injury accidents, which is alarming given the dulled senses caused by alcoholic beverages. Accidents caused by fog or wild animals are also represented in the statistics and make it clear how complex the challenges in road traffic are.

In view of the recent events in Erding and the associated scandals regarding accidents, it is clear that the traffic turnaround and safe driving practices are far from being exhausted. Good driving skills cannot be emphasized enough to minimize the risk of dangerous situations.
