Bavarian rowers take off: First tests for state squads in Erlangen!

Rowing in Bavaria is picking up speed! At the first long-distance test for the 2026 rowing year, which recently took place in Erlangen on the Main-Danube Canal, the rowers presented elite performances. As the Main post reports, this sighting is crucial for acceptance into the state squad of the Bavarian Rowing Association (BRV).

Florian Pacyga, a talented athlete, competed in the Junior B single sculls over a distance of 6000 meters and faced 19 competitors. A week earlier he had already competed in the long distance over 4000 meters in Würzburg. In Erlangen he took 4th place and was satisfied with his performance. Coach Marie Belschner praised the overall results, but also warned that the path to success still requires a lot of work.

Sightings and successes

The past year was not without challenges for the young rowers. Willi Michel and Hugo Felsner overcame a cold to be able to compete on the 3000-meter distance. Both had already achieved an impressive success in the double sculls for 13 and 14 year olds in 2025, taking first place by a clear margin. Such successes are essential because they influence classification into the BRV squad.

The state squad, the first official level in the German squad system, offers talented rowers the opportunity to develop further. The website also provides information on this German Rowing Association, which sets out the binding criteria for cadre support.

About the German Rowing Association

The DRV, founded in Cologne in 1883, is the oldest association in German sports. The number of races the rowers have taken part in over the years shows the immense growth of the sport. In 2008, rowing became an integral part of competitions for athletes with disabilities.
In addition, the DRV is not only responsible for competitive sports, but also promotes touring rowing and popular sports, which attracts a broad base of members, such as DRV emphasized.

Due to the close structures and central organization, which also includes public support, athletes are under a strong support umbrella, especially in the youth sector. With such support, the path to excellence is paved, which also encourages upcoming talents like Pacyga and his colleagues to accelerate their development and pursue their goals in rowing.
