A shocking tragedy occurred yesterday in Kellerwald, Franconia, while preparations for the popular Annafest in Forchheim were in full swing. A sales trailer that was very heavy, weighing around 1.5 tons, got out of control and seriously injured an elderly couple. The incident occurred around 6:20 p.m. on a steep road above the festival site while the trailer was being set up for the event. According to that Bayreuther Tagblatt The trailer was initially secured with wheel chocks, but these came loose during alignment, leading to the terrible incident.
The 82-year-old woman and her 75-year-old husband were hit by the trailer and trapped between it and an adjacent sign. Shockingly, the man had to be resuscitated at the scene before being flown to hospital in a rescue helicopter. His wife was transported in an ambulance. Both have sustained serious injuries, although further details of their medical condition are yet to be provided. The accident required a large number of emergency services: around 70 firefighters, emergency services employees, police officers, THW and emergency pastors were deployed to help. The emergency services themselves also received pastoral care, as did the driver of the sales van.
Consequences of the accident
It is currently unclear whether the accident will have an impact on the Annafest. The affected road will remain closed until further notice, which could affect the logistics of the event. This anxious question remains in the air for many, as the Annafest is very popular in the region.
Security aspects at major events are of great importance. The North Rhine-Westphalia State Association points out that extensive security concepts must be drawn up when planning and carrying out events. These concepts include structural, technical and organizational measures and must be submitted to the responsible municipalities in a timely manner. The orientation framework, which has existed since 2012 and has been revised several times since then, is intended to ensure that a structured security planning procedure exists in cities and municipalities.
There is now certainly a discussion in the region about how such accidents can be prevented in the future in order to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Awareness of safety standards at events should be discussed intensively in the coming days and weeks, especially in view of the tragedy that occurred during the build-up to Annafest.
