Freising and neighboring communities: Cycling in the middle field, but room for improvement!
In the Freising district, the current ADFC bicycle climate test from 2024 shows that the cities and communities are in the solid middle range in terms of bicycle friendliness. The results were published on June 18, 2025 and relate to the survey that took place between September and November 2024. Around 600 citizens from the five municipalities of Freising, Eching, Moosburg, Neufahrn and Hallbergmoos took part to share their views on cycling infrastructure. merkur.de reports that the overall grades of the municipalities hover around 4, i.e. “sufficient”.
The respective number of participants makes it clear how committed citizens are to contributing their opinions. Freising leads with 285 participants, followed by Eching (108), Moosburg (89), Neufahrn (69) and Hallbergmoos (53). However, progress is mixed: Freising managed to jump from 12th place to 7th place among 49 Bavarian municipalities with 20,000 to 50,000 inhabitants, while Neufahrn improved to 15th place. Eching ranks 8th out of 95 in the “under 20,000 inhabitants” category. However, Hallbergmoos and Moosburg are in the back half of the rankings, with Hallbergmoos at number 50 and Moosburg at number 55.
Taking cyclists’ wishes seriously
The voices of the ADFC representatives are clear: Ulrich Vogl from ADFC Freising emphasizes the citizens' recognition of the efforts made so far, but warns of the possible negative consequences of an approach that is too hesitant. Fritz Hammel from ADFC Neufahrn/Eching emphasizes that cyclists' sense of safety must definitely improve. Andreas Kagermeier from the ADFC wonders how long one can ignore the inadequate efforts in Moosburg and Hallbergmoos, where the feeling of acceptance among cyclists has fallen sharply. ADFC bicycle climate test is an important initiative that aims to assess the satisfaction of cyclists in Germany and use the feedback to adapt the infrastructure.
In the context of the test, we have to ask ourselves more often: What stands in the way of cyclists? A critical look at the connections along the district roads is necessary because there are concerns that the district council could withdraw from its responsibility. The need to respond to participants' needs and comments resulting from the survey is more important than ever. Green KEH supports the demand that all cyclists should take part in the survey in order to get a comprehensive picture of the situation and identify the technical and safety deficiencies.
