Freising's Café Übrig wins climate protection award for food rescue!
There is reason to be happy in Freising: Café Übrig was awarded the Bavarian Climate Protection Prize 2025. This innovative café, launched in 2021, is not only the first food sharing café in Bavaria, but is also committed to saving food. This year the prize will be awarded to four winners who have made outstanding contributions to climate protection and adaptation to climate change. Café Übrig will receive an impressive sum of 15,000 euros from a total prize money of 25,000 euros. Süddeutsche reports that ...
“We are very happy about the recognition of our work,” said Caro Stanzl, a board member of the Übrig Association. The prize money will be used primarily for the organization and public relations of the café. With around 200 members and around 25 volunteers, the actors at Café Übrig are actively involved in fighting food waste and creating a strong awareness of how to use resources.
Cheers to food rescuers
The café's motto is: "Donate what's left, use what's otherwise thrown away." Not only are small dishes and cakes made from rescued food prepared here, but education and awareness-raising are also carried out. Regular events, get-togethers and lectures are part of the program to convey the topic of food rescue and processing in a lively manner. The association also works actively with schools and kindergartens to promote awareness of the appreciation of food at an early stage.
The Café Übrig concept is part of a larger movement: The foodsharing e.V. initiative fights against food waste and promotes sustainable social change. This drives the vision of radically minimizing food waste and supporting a conscious lifestyle. With the help of local pickup points and a digital app that provides real-time information about available food, the initiative facilitates exchange and ensures distribution based on needs. The food banks in Germany make a significant contribution to saving food and collect 265,000 tons of edible food every year that would otherwise have ended up in the trash. The Tafel explains that...
These challenges require innovative solutions and strong cooperation. Projects like Café Übrig and the foodsharing e.V. initiative show that creative thinking and joint action pay off. They are pioneers in an important social change towards a conscious and sustainable use of food.
