Huge rush of visitors at Bundeswehr Day in Freyung!

Bundeswehr Day attracted an enormous crowd in Freyung on Saturday, June 28, 2025. Around 5,500 visitors had already been counted at 9 a.m., and by 12:15 p.m. the number had risen to almost 10,000, as press officer Michael Plettl reported. The official opening took place at 10:45 a.m. in the presence of battalion commander Dan Tomuzia and minister Florian Herrmann.

The highlight of the day was the impressive flyover of three Airbus A400Ms, which not only made the hearts of aviation enthusiasts beat faster with their high loading volume and diverse application options. The A400M, Airbus' latest model, can carry up to 37 tonnes and features advanced technologies that improve its operational capability. It is used worldwide for both military purposes and humanitarian aid, such as evacuating people from crisis areas or providing care after natural disasters.

A varied program

The program for Bundeswehr Day included numerous attractions that provided entertainment. In addition to the demonstrations of heavy equipment and hand-to-hand combat techniques, fashion shows also took place. The offer to take a look into the cockpit of the Tornado was particularly popular and was in high demand. Freyung police chief Ingrid Grötzinger also contributed to the good atmosphere by handing out popcorn to the visitors. A variety of stands with food and drinks ensured physical well-being, creating a cozy atmosphere and inviting people to linger.

Among the Airbus models, the C-160 Transall, the C295 and the A400M stand out. While the C-160 Transall is a medium transport aircraft with a capacity of up to 16 tons, the C295 can transport up to 9 tons. The A400M, however, offers the largest loading volume at 37 tons and is used in various configurations, for example for transporting troops or humanitarian goods.

A look into the future

Airbus has worked closely with the Bundeswehr in recent years. Today the A400M can be used both as a flying hospital and for airborne operations. It has proven indispensable, particularly during evacuation missions from Kabul and Sudan or in natural disaster relief in Turkey and Libya. In addition, work is being done on the future viability of the A400M in order to continue to establish it as an all-rounder in modern warfare.

Airbus also plans to build a new maintenance center in Wunstorf, scheduled to be operational in mid-2027, to further improve technical support, maintenance and spare parts management for the A400M fleet.

Overall, the Bundeswehr Day in Freyung was not only a great success, but also impressively demonstrated how important aviation technology is for the Bundeswehr and society. By midday it was already clear: people were enthusiastic about the variety of performances on display and had an unforgettable day.
