E-scooter chaos in Fürstenfeldbruck: City is planning tougher measures!
In Fürstenfeldbruck, parking e-scooters is bringing a breath of fresh air to the discussion about urban order. Illegally parked scooters repeatedly block sidewalks, and the city is faced with the challenge of taking tougher measures against rental companies in order to get the problem under control. Loud Mercury E-scooters can only be rented and parked in designated areas, but the regulations are often ignored.
The numbers speak for themselves: In July, the provider Lime recorded around 8,000 trips with 1,800 users, with the average trip distance being around 1.5 kilometers and lasting around eight minutes. There are currently 40 e-scooters in use, but they are often parked improperly - for example, directly in front of driveways, garages or zebra crossings. This not only causes anger for the residents, but also forces the city administration to examine options for solving the problem.
Initiatives to improve the parking situation
Although there are only around ten complaints about incorrectly parked scooters in both municipalities, Fürstenfeldbruck and Germering, the city is not prepared to ignore this issue. Martin Hubert, the deputy head of the Germering police station, reports that the police have not recorded any significant incidents, but the district office is still planning to take measures together with Lime against illegal parking, an evaluation by shows South Germans.
One idea is to introduce fines that increase with the number of violations to encourage drivers to be more careful. The Lime app is designed to help users remember to park properly at the end of their journey and to request a photo of the parked vehicle. Complaints about incorrectly parked scooters can be made directly to Lime for faster processing.
Scooter as a practical means of transport
E-scooters are particularly popular at train stations and important bus stops. Despite the strict requirements, the existing number is surprisingly low: since 2018, the police in Fürstenfeldbruck have only documented three accidents involving electric scooters, while in Germering a few accidents in the upper single-digit range have been registered. These numbers are remarkable, especially considering that many e-scooter users are caught under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In Germering, 25 drivers were stopped in this context.
The market for e-scooters is in flux: While the Bird company, which started with 140 rental scooters in 2021, has withdrawn from the German market, Lime and the district office are continuing to actively scan the situation. Whether and when the number of rental scooters will be increased is currently not up for debate, but developments in this matter remain exciting and offer scope for further initiatives.
