Swimming icon Maren Piskora ends her career at the age of 92
For many, swimming is more than just a sport - it is a passion that lasts a lifetime. Maren Piskora proves this impressively, having now ended her active swimming career at the age of 92. The long-time starter of SSG Neptun Germering has not only set numerous records in her impressive career, but also remains closely connected to the sport of swimming. She wants to live out her enthusiasm for water both actively and passively and continues to follow competitions, for example those of Florian Wellbrock, a four-time open water world champion Mercury reported.
Piskora, who was born in Münster, has experienced a lot in her life. During the Second World War she had to survive bombing raids in Fulda. She taught herself to swim - a feat she achieved with persistence and an unerring feel for the water. She later worked as a primary school teacher and sports teacher. However, her swimming career really began when a coach discovered her talent and encouraged her to compete.
A vibrant career
In her apartment in Gräfelfing, Piskora keeps over 2,000 medals and memories from trips to 160 countries. It's fair to say that her passion for travel began in Australia in 1988, at her first World Cup. A highlight of her career was the most important medal she won at a world championship in South Korea six years ago. She described the feeling afterwards as that of an Olympic champion – what a feeling of exhilaration!
Piskora was a member of SSG Neptun for over 40 years and gave swimming lessons in the Gräfelfinger school pool. The fact that she was often the only starter in her age group did not diminish her commitment one bit. It was precisely the loneliness during the competitions that made her a pioneer in her age group. This loyalty to the sport of swimming and her unobtrusive but powerful influence make her a role model for many.
A fulfilled life
Piskora looks back on her full and varied life with a smile. She expresses gratitude for all the experiences she has had and the people who have been able to accompany her. She is a legend in the world of swimming and her departure from active competition undoubtedly leaves a void.
Piskora remains loyal to swimming. Whether in the water or as a spectator on the sidelines - her passion will continue to accompany her, because for her swimming is not just sport, but also joy in life. The term “swimming” may have its roots in Middle High German, but for Piskora it reflects much more: a life characterized by movement and passion.
