Hrgota breaks record: Fürth is desperately fighting against relegation!

Branimir Hrgota, a former Eintracht Frankfurt striker, is currently causing a lot of talk in the second division. Since moving to the Greuther Fürth game association in the summer of 2019, he has quickly developed into a key player and contributed significantly to the club's promotion to the second division in 2021. But this season, out of the blue, the worm appears to be in, as Fürth is currently deep in crisis mode and is fighting against relegation. Only three points separate the team from the relegation zone.

However, coach Thomas Kleine was skeptical in an important match against Karlsruher SC this season and left Hrgota on the bench even though he was fit. This could turn out to be an unfortunate decision, as KSC came out of the game with a clear 4-1 win, in which Hrgota only came on as a substitute in the 69th minute. Nevertheless, he scored the only goal for the clover leaves, with which he became the club's record goalscorer and displaced Klaus Heinlein. A nice consolation, but certainly no reason for the people of Fürth to be happy.

Contract situation and future prospects

There are exciting but also uncertain times ahead for Hrgota. His contract expires next summer and he can officially sign for a new club from January 1, 2026. He has flirted with a move in the past and interest from other clubs such as Hannover 96 could tempt him to explore new shores. Given the current situation at Greuther Fürth, who are struggling with the most goals conceded (28) in the league, a change of scenery could be quite attractive for Hrgota.

The sacking of Rachid Azzouzi, the former manager, also greatly changed the club's identity. Now the question is how these changes will affect the entire team and Hrgota in particular. The Swede has played three international matches so far in his career and has a total of 118 scorer points in 310 first and second division games. A remarkable value that shows what potential it has.

The football transfer market under pressure

The 1st Bundesliga is one of the five most successful and financially strongest leagues in Europe, but it also has to deal with challenges. In the 2024/2025 season, expenses in the Bundesliga exceeded income, leading to a significant transfer deficit. Bayern Munich topped the list of transfer spending with a whopping 149 million euros, while Dortmund also caused a stir with 40 million euros for the record transfers of Ousmane Dembélé and Jude Bellingham. In the Premier League, on the other hand, there was a real transfer wave with spending of around 2.8 billion euros, which does not exist in this form everywhere.

How the situation surrounding Branimir Hrgota and the general situation in the Bundesliga will develop remains to be seen. One thing is certain: there is something going on – for both Hrgota and Greuther Fürth. The coming months could be crucial, both for his individual career and for the fate of the club.
