Heat alarm in Bavaria: thunderstorms and a high risk of forest fires are imminent!
On Wednesday, June 25th, Bavaria showed its hot side. Temperatures climbed between 30 and 34 degrees, and of course that not only makes for sweaty days, but also significant warnings. The German Weather Service (DWD) then warned of high UV intensity; Protective measures are therefore urgently needed. It is advised to avoid going outdoors between 11am and 4pm and to equip yourself with sunproof clothing, sunscreen (SPF 30), sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats to beat the heat. Messenger district reports that the forest fire risk in Bavaria is also at the highest warning level of 5 for several regions. Areas such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Schwandorf, Weidenbach-Weiherschneidbach, Regensburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Wielenbach are particularly affected.
Forest fires are not unknown in Germany, but the extreme weather conditions increase the risks. In recent years, particularly in 2018 and 2019, extreme drought caused an increase in forest fires, especially in the northeastern regions of the country. Even though the area of affected areas generally decreased between 1991 and 2017, the current weather situation shows that the risk of forest fires remains a serious issue. The Federal Environment Agency points out that the risk will continue to increase with global warming.
Outlook on weather developments
But the heat is just the foretaste. According to the forecasts, heavy thunderstorms are expected in Bavaria on Thursday, June 26th. The sky will show more clouds than sun and showers and thunderstorms are expected in the second half of the day. On the night of Friday, June 27th, it will continue to rain and there will be isolated thunderstorms. On Saturday, June 28th, Bavaria can expect temperatures between 28 and 32 degrees despite thunderstorm privileges. So it remains exciting to see what the weather has in store for the region in the coming days.
After all, the hot summer of 2024 is also remembered by many people. At the time, the DWD warned of extreme temperatures reaching up to 37 degrees in some parts of Germany, and this led to an increase in heat-related deaths in Europe. As the daily news reported, the fire brigade association warned this year in particular of the extreme risk of forest fires, which is increased not only by the heat but also by the necessary forestry and harvesting work.
Now it is important to act with foresight in order to protect not only yourself, but also nature. Preventive measures are the be-all and end-all when it comes to protecting yourself during such extreme weather conditions.
