The SpateGAN-ERA5 model uses historical weather data to generate precipitation fields with a resolution of up to 2 kilometers every 10 minutes. This method was published in a scientific article in the journal npj Climate and Atmospheric Science. By using high-resolution weather radar measurement data from Germany, the model can also quantify the uncertainties in the forecasts, which is particularly useful for combating regional heavy rain events.
Markus Reichstein, director at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena, emphasizes that AI is used not only for weather forecasting, but also for recognizing patterns in extreme climate phenomena.
