New cycle path between Oberau and Ettal: Steep challenges await!

There is exciting news for cyclists and nature lovers in Oberau. A new cycle path connection between the picturesque Loisachtal and the Ammertal is currently being planned to close the gap that the Ettaler Berg represents in the regional cycle path network. The Weilheim State Building Authority, under the direction of Martin Herda, commissioned a feasibility study, which has now presented the first results. As Merkur reports, the situation is by no means easy: Alte Ettaler Straße sometimes reaches gradients of up to 21%, which is a real adventure for cyclists.

A total of five variants were examined for the future cycle path between Oberau and Ettal. The aim is to create the safest and most attractive route possible. The heavy traffic on federal highway 23, which numbers around 8,000 vehicles every day and increases on weekends, is closely linked to the route taken by cyclists. They like to avoid the steep sections and tend to use the busy federal highway, which represents a significant source of danger. The need for safe cycling connections was clearly recognized, as Stbawm also emphasizes.

Diverse solutions in planning

The first considerations about possible variants lead to different solution approaches. One of the options that is easy to implement financially is to expand Alte Ettaler Straße, with estimated costs of around 2.3 million euros. A second option would be to add a cycle path to the side of the B23, but financing this option is proving tricky as the estimated cost could rise to up to 23 million euros.

Another option is to convert the existing farm road north of the B23. Unfortunately, this turned out to be too steep, with a gradient of up to 30% expected in some areas. If you continue to lecture, you will also find that a listed natural stone building on Alte Ettaler Straße creates additional challenges. The last 600 meters of the path are also very steep and crossing the main road poses difficulties.

Construction preview and outlook

The district administration and the municipality of Oberau agree that the construction burden and future maintenance will remain with the municipality. The use of the route for cycling on both sides is also being discussed. A maximum gradient of 3% should be aimed for, while Alte Ettaler Straße is already at 21% in places. But despite the difficulties, construction is scheduled to begin in autumn 2026, which is significantly increasing the anticipation among cyclists and nature lovers in the region.

Further planning is currently underway and the public's concerns are being taken into account in the decision-making process, as highlighted by the RV-K planning office, which is responsible for carrying out feasibility studies.
