Rapid speed in Unterammergau: Mayor sounds the alarm!

The traffic situation in Unterammergau has recently become worrying. A recent survey shows that over 24% of cars driving through the town in a week exceeded the 50km/h speed limit. This was documented between July 23rd and 30th at a measuring point at the southern entrance to the town, in the immediate vicinity of the kindergarten. A total of an impressive 16,589 speeding violations were recorded, putting the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and especially children into question. Mayor Michael Buchwieser therefore expressed his concerns and emphasized the need to take immediate measures. According to Merkur, over 200 drivers are in serious danger of losing their driver's license because no speed trap was installed at the entrance to the town during the measurements.

The numbers speak for themselves: 7,500 drivers exceeded the 60 km/h mark, while 229 people raced through Unterammergau at more than 80 km/h. What is particularly alarming is that three road users even drove past the measuring point at over 110 km/h. In fact, these violations have led to a noticeable increase in insecurity in the area. To counteract this, the municipality has started to implement measures such as planting trees to reduce speed.

Measures and discussions

In response to the alarming data, the municipality has already carried out regular speed camera checks. But the results show that these are not enough to encourage road users to comply with speed regulations. The idea of setting up a permanently installed speed camera therefore plays a central role in the current discussions. Mayor Buchwieser is looking to talk to the police to discuss further steps and increase security in the area. A first on-site meeting with the officials has already taken place, and a second meeting is being planned.

The residents hope that early intervention and the planned measures will soon improve traffic safety again. The focus is clearly on protecting vulnerable road users. Unterammergau is facing a major challenge that can only be overcome through joint action and consistent controls. The local community is called upon to be vigilant and actively participate in the discussion about improvements - after all, we all care about the safety of our hometown.
