Swimmer sank near Seehausen: rescue workers on a large scale!

A tragic incident occurred at Lake Staffelsee in Seehausen on June 22, 2025, which placed great demands on the water rescue workers. At around 2:45 p.m., a swimmer who was swimming between Seeleiten Castle and the island of Wörth suddenly sank. Eyewitnesses reported that the man, who is said to be between 60 and 70 years old, slipped and no longer appeared. This immediately triggered a large contingent of rescue workers, including several fire departments and water rescue services from the region, who were deployed with drones, rescue divers and other water rescuers. A helicopter supported the search from the air, but unfortunately there was no report of success at the time of going to press later that day - the man remained missing and his relatives had not yet received a missing person report.

A worrying picture emerged across Bavaria this weekend. Several swimming accidents were reported, which attracted the attention of the water rescue services. For example, a 23-year-old student went missing at Lake Starnberg after he jumped from a motorboat into the water and sank. Search efforts are still underway. According to a report from idowa.de, several swimmers also suffered accidents, including a 30-year-old man who drowned in the Lech near Kissing and died in hospital as a result of the incident.

Worrying developments

The Töging am Inn water rescue service even reported an animal rescue operation as part of its operation, in which a dog that had drifted 20 kilometers in the Inn Canal was saved. In addition to the tragic incidents, Thomas Huber, the state chairman of the water rescue service in Bavaria, suspected the extent of the dangers to natural waters. He described the increase in swimming accidents as alarming and called on the population to be careful.

Another worrying detail comes from the DLRG, which recorded an increase in fatal accidents in German waters in 2023. A total of 411 people died, an increase of 31 deaths compared to the previous year. Ute Vogt, President of the DLRG, expressed the hope that such numbers would raise people's awareness and address the dangers of swimming in water.

The upcoming warm months are known to increase the risk of swimming accidents, which the DLRG also recognizes. Particular attention should be paid to parents of young children in order to make them aware of the particular dangers that their children are exposed to in the water.

Today's incident at Lake Staffelsee is another tragic example that should remind us all to be careful and careful when swimming. The water rescue workers face great challenges and do unimaginable things in such situations. It remains to be hoped that the missing man will be found soon.
