On July 15, 2025, the bodies of a six-year-old boy and his 33-year-old father were recovered from Lake Eibsee in Upper Bavaria. A week after a tragic pedal boat accident in which the two disappeared, the search by the police and a specialized underwater company ended with a sad result. The two missing people were Chinese citizens who were traveling on the pedal boat with their family, consisting of a 34-year-old mother and a four-year-old daughter. In one fateful incident, the boy fell from the boat and the father jumped after him but never resurfaced, police confirmed.
The recovery began on Saturday morning after the specialist company located the bodies on Friday afternoon. The difficult weather did not allow immediate rescue. The bodies were found at a depth of around 24 meters, which is the height of an eight to nine story high-rise building. At other places on the Eibsee the maximum depth is up to 36 meters. The police operation was successfully completed and the criminal police in Garmisch-Partenkirchen have now taken over the investigation.

According to the police, it is believed to be a tragic water accident. No evidence of external influence could be found. Stefan Sonntag, the police press spokesman, emphasized the importance of bringing the case to the best possible end. The criminal police will now reconstruct the events before handing the case over to the public prosecutor.
